Meet your counselor

Paul Zohav M.Ed.

I have spent over 30 years helping couples in Tucson find their way back to each other. Not with theory. Not with endless analysis of the past. With practical tools you can use the same day you learn them.

I hold a Master's in Counseling from the University of Virginia. I have served as a chaplain and worked in domestic violence counseling. I have sat with couples in moments that most counselors never see up close.

I also work with military couples near Davis-Monthan AFB and first responder families including law enforcement, firefighters, and corrections officers across Southern Arizona.

If you are tired of trying everything else, let's talk.

Paul's communication frameworks for couples

Over 30 years of working with couples, Paul Zohav, M.Ed., has developed a set of practical communication frameworks taught in session and used by couples the same week they learn them. These are not textbook techniques. They are named, teachable tools built from real experience with real couples.

The Bubble Boundary
Every marriage has a bubble — a protected space that belongs only to the two of you. Some behaviors belong inside it: honesty, intimacy, trust, and mutual respect. Others do not: withdrawal, deception, unspoken resentment, and emotional shutdown. Paul teaches couples to ask one simple question before speaking or acting: "Does what I am about to say or do belong in our bubble?"
The Yes-And Skill
Most couples react to each other instead of responding. "Yes, and" is a two-word tool that interrupts that pattern. Starting any sentence with "Yes, and" signals that you have heard your partner and keeps the conversation moving forward instead of shutting it down. Paul teaches this in session one and couples use it immediately.
Seems/Tends To Language
Speaking in absolutes ("you always," "you never") triggers what Paul calls the Truth App — an automatic mental response that makes your partner defensive instead of listening. Replacing absolutes with "it seems" and "tends to" bypasses that defensive reflex and keeps both partners present in the conversation.
Get To vs. Got To
Most couples describe their relationship as a series of obligations. Paul teaches couples to replace "got to" with "get to" — a small linguistic shift that moves a relationship from survival mode to a life lived by choice and opportunity. When both partners speak "get to" language, the entire tone of the marriage shifts.
When-and-Wonder Communication
When either partner needs to raise a difficult subject, Paul teaches a three-step structure: describe the situation objectively starting with "when," share how it affected you, and invite resolution with "I wonder how we can work this out together." This approach removes blame and opens a space for real conversation without either partner becoming defensive.
Time Out/Time In
A time out without a time in is just avoidance. Paul teaches couples to pair every time out with a specific, committed time in — a concrete promise to return to the conversation when both partners are ready. This builds trust that difficult conversations will be finished, not abandoned.
The Noticer-Interpreter-Coper Framework
Every person carries communication software installed in childhood. When something happens, the mind notices it, interprets it through the lens of past experience, and develops a coping strategy — often one that made sense at age seven but causes damage at age forty. Paul helps couples identify and rewrite these outdated patterns so they stop running the relationship invisibly.

These frameworks are introduced in Paul's book, Marriage and Communication: Recipes for Life, and taught directly in session with every couple he works with.
